Course Offerings

Storytime (15 minutes) Pre-K–K

Storytime sessions include a story from the work of children's author Suzanne Tate. Choose from the following titles:

  • Oozey Octopus
  • Spiny Sea Star
  • Stevie B. Seahorse

What Is a Fish? (30 minutes) Grades K–3

Students learn how fish are different from other animals and how their special characteristics make them well adapted for survival in their watery environment.

How to Be a Fish Detective (45 minutes) Grades 3–5

Students learn about the characteristics of fish and their adaptations for survival in their environment. Activity worksheets to be completed during the Aquarium visit accompany this lecture.

Secrets of the Shark (30 minutes) Grades K–3;  (45 minutes) Grades 4–8

Students learn about sharks' unique biology, get the scoop on facts and fiction about these misunderstood animals, and become aware of the threats sharks are facing.

Coral Reefs (45 minutes) Grades 4–8

Often called "rainforests of the sea," coral reefs provide numerous benefits to animals and people. Students learn how these environments play a vital role in our ocean ecosystem and why they need protection.

Amphibians & Reptiles (45 minutes) Grades 4–8

There is a lot more to these creepy and crawly animals than the eye can see. Students will understand the differences between amphibians and reptiles, their importance in our environment, and what challenges they are encountering.

Endangered Species (45 minutes) Grades 4–8

Students gain background knowledge about the Endangered Species Act, learn why animals are considered endangered, and understand why biodiversity benefits us all.

Estuaries (45 minutes) Grades 4–8

Using the Chesapeake Bay as a model, students learn how estuaries play an important role for wildlife and why their health and preservation is crucial for the survival of numerous species.

Aliens Among Us
Introduced and Invasive Species
(45 minutes) Grades 4–8

Students explore the world of animals and plants initiated in the local ecosystem from around the world. Learn about their impact on the environment and some problems they are creating for native species. Species included are the snakehead, rapa whelk, phragmites, nutria, mute swan, and purple loosestrife.
